It’s hard to think of any other advertising channel, that can build such a high level of brand awareness and loyalty as Advergames can.

Advergames are custom made video games that are developed for the sole purpose of promoting a company, brand, or product. It’s probably one of the few ways you can advertise a boring everyday product, and actually make it a fun experience for consumers. Advergames  can be produced for a variety of platforms, including consoles (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, etc), Mobile (iOS, Android, etc), or Flash/Unity played on an internet browser.

Although Advergames can be highly effective, they can also be expensive, depending on the game experience you want the gamers to have, and the platforms you deliver it on. Out of the 3 main types of in-game advertising (the others being dynamic and static in-game advertising), Advergames are by far the most expensive type.

Advergames built for Mobile and Flash/Unity are typically the least expensive types of Advergames, as the gameplay is normally much simpler and takes less development time due to the simpler graphics. In contrast, Advergames for Console platforms are the most expensive type to develop, and can take much more time to create as they have the ability to be jam-packed with great gameplay, and are able to sustain impressive graphics, RAM, memory, and storage.

In addition to the development costs of Advergames, which could be well into the 5-6 figure range, you’ll need to set some budget aside to actually market the game. Once the game has been completed and developed, gamers aren’t going to play the game unless they know about it and discover it. A common tactic used by many consumer based companies, is that they’ll include the Advergames along with their retail products or promotions. Take for example Burger King – a few years ago they developed an Advergame for the Xbox 360 console called ‘Sneak King’, they then included this video game as a freebie with meal orders over a certain amount.

One of the last big expenses to take into consideration for Advergames is technical support, updates, and bug fixes. For several months after an Advergame is developed, even the best games may run into issues. Having some sort of technical support is highly recommended, whether it’s phone support or in the form of a community help forum. If technical issues do arise, often times updates or patches are required to the fix bugs in the game. So the expense to keep in mind here, would be keeping the game development team on payroll for a few months after the game has been released.

All expenses aside, you get what you pay for in advertising, and Advergames are no exception. Advergames are highly effective, and an amazing way to connect with current and potential customers.
